Tweens Presence Online:

  • By 9 years-old, 90% of tweens report having used the Internet.
  • Tweens online presence doubles or even triples between the ages of 8-10 and 11-12.

Conversations with Parents:

  • 73% of tweens report that Mom and Dad have talked to them "a lot" about Internet safety.
  • 96% of tweens tell Mom and Dad at least some of what they do online.
  • The percentage of tweens that tell parents "a lot" or "everything" they do online drops rapidly with age. Only 69% of 11-12 year-olds tell Mom and Dad a lot/everything versus 86% percent of 8-10 year-olds.

Social Networking:

  • 34% of 11 and 12 year-olds have a profile on a social networking site.
  • Tweens with social networking profiles post more online and face greater exposure to unknown contacts and online bullying.
  • More than 1 in 5 tweens post information about themselves online, including pictures, the city they live in and how old they are.
  • 37% of tweens ages 11-12 admit to posting a fake age online.

Contacts from Strangers:

  • 28% percent of tweens have been contacted over the Internet by someone they don't know.
  • 29% of tweens have been contacted online by someone they don't know; 18% of them keep the messages to themselves, and 11% have chatted.
